Kim Kardashian on Choosing Herself, Motherhood and Finding Stability After Divorce
Kim Kardashian has opened up about one of the most difficult decisions of her life: choosing to leave a deeply complicated marriage in order to protect her own well-being and become a better mother to her four children.
In a candid conversation on Call Her Daddy, Kardashian reflected on the emotional challenges of ending her relationship with Kanye West, the pressure of having their private struggles play out in public, and the ways the experience changed her understanding of happiness, stability and self-worth.
Choosing Herself for Her Children
For Kardashian, leaving was not simply about walking away from a relationship. It was about making a difficult decision that she believed would ultimately benefit her family.
“I had to save myself in order to be a better mom for everyone,” she explained, acknowledging that her children might not fully understand her decision immediately. She believes that, as they grow older, they will eventually understand why she made the choices she did.
The decision was especially difficult because Kardashian was often the only adult who could make the final call for herself and her children. She understood that some of her choices might not make sense to them at first, but she hoped that time would give them a clearer perspective.
Her family and friends also witnessed much of what was happening. Kardashian said that many difficult situations occurred around her family, making it increasingly difficult for those close to her to ignore what she was experiencing.
She recalled feeling deeply disconnected at times, becoming unusually quiet while trying to process everything that was happening. People around her could see that she was struggling, but rather than aggressively telling her to leave, they chose to support her in finding a healthier direction.
“They knew that I had a lot of love and respect for that relationship and four babies,” Kardashian said. She emphasized that she had been willing to do almost anything to make the marriage work.
The Pressure of Living Through a Divorce in Public
Ending a marriage is difficult for anyone, but Kardashian faced an additional challenge: millions of people were watching.
As one of the world’s most recognizable couples, Kardashian and West’s relationship had been celebrated, analyzed and criticized by the public for years. Walking away therefore meant dealing not only with the private consequences of divorce but also with the expectations and judgments of outsiders.
Kardashian admitted that she worried people would see her as someone who simply gave up when a relationship became difficult.
“I wouldn’t want someone to think I was leaving someone because it got too hard,” she said.
She also struggled with the idea of failure. Having experienced multiple marriages that ultimately did not work out, she questioned whether she should view herself as unsuccessful in relationships.
Eventually, however, Kardashian rejected that way of thinking.
An over-a-decade-long relationship that produced four children, she argued, cannot simply be defined as a failure because it ended. Instead, it was a significant chapter of her life that brought her four children and countless experiences.
“You can’t live that way,” she said, referring to the fear of constantly worrying about what other people might say. Ultimately, she realized that she had to return to herself and prioritize her own happiness.
When Staying Becomes Harder Than Leaving
One of the most relatable aspects of Kardashian’s story is her acknowledgment that, sometimes, staying in a difficult relationship can feel easier than leaving.
For her, there was no single dramatic moment that suddenly ended everything. Instead, she described a gradual accumulation of experiences that made her realize she could no longer accept the instability surrounding her.
She spoke about situations involving negative comments about members of her family and the public disclosure of highly personal matters. More fundamentally, she said she no longer felt emotionally or financially secure.
Kardashian illustrated the instability by recalling periods when she would return home to discover that expensive cars had suddenly disappeared.
At one point, she said, there were five Lamborghinis at home. Then, after West experienced one of his episodes, they were gone because he had given them away to friends. Later, another five cars appeared, only to disappear again.
The issue, she explained, was not simply the cars themselves. It was the uncertainty.
“I never felt like I knew what you were going to get when you wake up,” she said.
For a mother trying to create a stable environment for her children, that unpredictability became increasingly difficult to live with.
Discovering a New Life After Walking Away
Perhaps surprisingly, Kardashian said that leaving the relationship ultimately opened doors she had never expected.
When she first decided to walk away, she believed she might have to completely separate herself from the worlds of fashion and art—areas that had been closely connected to her former relationship.
She imagined returning to an entirely different life and accepting that her happiness might require giving up some of the things she had once been surrounded by.
Instead, the opposite happened.
Some of her biggest professional projects emerged after she made the decision to leave. She also developed some of her strongest relationships within fashion and the arts.
Kardashian described the experience as if the universe were rewarding her for moving in the right direction.
For her, the lesson was to pay attention to the signs that life provides and to recognize when circumstances begin pointing toward a healthier path.
Despite everything that happened, Kardashian said she has no regrets.
“I have four amazing, beautiful babies,” she said.
How Her Past Has Affected Dating
Kardashian also discussed how having a highly publicized former marriage has affected her romantic life.
Dating someone who knows they may have to deal with a famous and outspoken ex-partner is not necessarily easy. Kardashian admitted that there have been situations in which she became close to someone before realizing that the complications surrounding her past relationship could become a problem.
She recalled thinking that the right person would not be intimidated by the circumstances.
At the same time, she understands why someone might hesitate. Being romantically involved with a person whose former marriage remains a constant subject of public discussion can be an enormous burden.
Her relationship with Pete Davidson became a particularly visible example of that pressure. Kardashian said she felt sad for Davidson because of the attention and controversy he experienced as a result of becoming involved with her.
She believed he did not deserve to be placed in such a difficult position, even though he handled the situation with grace.
The experience made Kardashian more protective of anyone she might date in the future. She developed a kind of emotional guard, worrying that a new partner could once again be dragged into circumstances beyond their control.
But she also recognizes that she cannot completely avoid relationships simply because of what might happen.
“I can’t live my life like that either,” she acknowledged.
Rejecting Comparisons With Her Ex-Husband’s Partners
Another unavoidable consequence of being a high-profile ex-wife is the constant comparison between Kardashian and West’s subsequent partners.
Whenever West begins a new relationship, the public can quickly turn it into a competition: Who is more beautiful? Who is more fashionable? Who is better suited to him?
Kardashian said she feels sympathy for the women who become caught in that cycle.
She does not believe it is fair to compare people or judge a new relationship based on what happened in a previous one. Every relationship is different, she explained, and outsiders rarely know what truly happens behind closed doors.
Ultimately, Kardashian said she tries to remind herself that those comparisons have nothing to do with her.
Comfortable With Being Single
Today, Kardashian says she is single—and genuinely content with it.
She revealed that this is the longest period she has spent single, but rather than feeling pressured to find someone, she is embracing the freedom and focus that come with being on her own.
Her four children remain her priority, and she says they require a great deal of her attention.
“I don’t know how I would fit something else in,” she admitted.
For now, she is not actively looking for a relationship. After experiencing different phases of dating and relationships throughout her life, Kardashian appears to be in no rush to begin another chapter.
It would take someone truly special to change that.
For Kardashian, the most important relationship at this point may be the one she has rebuilt with herself. After years of navigating marriage, motherhood, public scrutiny and personal instability under the world’s watch, she has arrived at a simple conclusion: choosing her own happiness is not selfish.
It is part of becoming the mother, woman and person she wants to be.
